China's Great April Fools' Joke

I didn't pull any tricks on my students, but China sure did pull a great April Fools' joke on the whole country.

Today is Monday!

That's right, Saturday is Monday. What a great joke! If only it had been a joke we'd all be laughing. But instead, we'll all be working on Saturday morning just as if it were Friday morning.

Each holiday, days are moved around to create the longest stretch of consecutive days off. The official holiday is on Tuesday April 5 (Qing Ming Jie "Tomb Sweeping Day). With Sunday being a day off, but Monday a work day, the government proclaimed Monday be moved to Saturday creating a stretch of three days off from Sunday-Tuesday.

Confused. Maybe. Actually, this marks the first time I've partially understood.
