Frequently Asked Questions

We would love to answer any of your questions about the return to China and our work there. We will answer, or find the answer, to any questions you have. Post your questions as a comment here.

Why the name "Twelve Two Times"?
The name comes from the verse in Romans, "Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." (ESV) To read more about the history of this name and blog click here.

Where do you live?
We live in Shenyang, Liaoning, China located in the northeast of China.

What do you do?
One is a high school math teacher in China and we both live intentionally to build relationships in the hope to testify truth.

How can I help?
We would love to partner with you for this opportunity. You can lift up the preparations and tasks, classes, campuses, teachers, students, etc. You can also help with some of the finances involved. For more information about your donation, please contact us and we'll send you information about partnering.

How long will you be in China?
We are excited to live and work in China for many years to come. Through careful uplifting we know we are meant to be in China as a career.

If I want to ship you something, what do you want?
We live in an amazing city with a great selection of "import foods." However, it's still China. Import goods are rare, or when we find them, they are quite expensive (500% mark up). Here are some items we would love to receive while in China:
  • Coffee (any coffee will do, the bolder the better, i.e., Starbucks Verona or HEB Taste of San Antonio)
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Kraft Blue Box Mac and Cheese
  • Pumpkin pie filling in a can
  • Ranch Salad Dressing packet mix
  • Salsa or salsa mixes
  • Alfredo sauce mixes
  • Cream of Wheat
  • Brown sugar
  • Hershey's cocoa powder
  • Crisco
  • Also seasonal items are good including candy canes, Easter egg dye, valentine's day cards, etc.

What is your address?
We would love to get you our address in both English and Chinese. Please contact us and we will send the address your way.

What's the weather like in China?
To give you a taste of the weather in Harbin the temperatures in January range from an average high of 6 F to a low of -15 F. Summertime temperatures are moderate ranging from highs around 78 F and lows of 60 F in August.

Are you able to come home?
Yes, we are able to come home every other summer to visit friends and family from early June through late July. With your financial help, we'll be able to visit every summer. Contact us to learn more.

Do you speak Chinese? Do your students speak English?
Thanks to the Chinese language program at a Shenyang university, M'Lynn learned Chinese of one year. She now has a strong foundation and fluency in Mandarin Chinese. We are continually dedicated to becoming more fluent in the language each year through individual studies, tutors, and daily practice.

How do you get around the city?
We depend on a lot of walking. If we need to go a little farther from home, then buses are everywhere and cost only 1 RMB ($0.15 USD) per trip. Taxis are available at an increased cost when time is an issue. However, we walk to the vegetable market, grocery store, restaurants, and the classroom.

Are you the only foreign teachers at your school?
No. We will serve on a team of teachers including over 50 people from different ages, nationalities, and family status. It's amazing to be surrounded by so many wonderful people.

Support Our Work

Serving in China is possible through individuals such as yourself. Each month we need to raise $3,700 and are looking for churches and individuals to partner with who are able to give both annual gifts and monthly donations. Any small amount will go a long way ($10, $20, $50, $100 per month).

If you’re interested in supporting our work in China or finding out more about what we do and why, contact us, read more about our sending organization, learn about Harbin, Heilongjiang our Chinese hometown, or why we're in China, or if you already know all you need to, you can give online (our teacher code is T219). All gifts are tax deductible and will cover things like our living expenses, insurance, training, support, and travel abroad.

Preliminary heartfelt thank you.

Why China?

Hello. We're teachers in China. We build relationships, live as servants, testify truth, and serve in Harbin, China. Read our story.

The memories from our first year in Nanchang, China (2005-06) urged us to return to share the eternal hope we have with others. The plan has been confirmed numerous times by our faithful Father, and all things have continually prepared us for the task at hand.

China is a land of change. In the 1980s, only 5% of high school graduates were able to attend college; now it is upwards of 15%. In the 1980s, Chinese people were largely isolated from the outside world. Now there are 298 million internet users, 1 billion mobile phone subscribers, and Chinese travel abroad in ever-increasing numbers. In the 1980s, 80% of the population lived in the rural areas and 20% lived in the cities. Now according to the 2010 national census that ratio is almost 50/50.

We are excited to share this wonderful task with you and allow you to be a part of the Father’s plan to redeem those in China who have not heard, but will come to understand (Isaiah 52:15). You can help us reach this goal by continually lifting up the newsletters we will send, and asking for partners to come forward to join in the Father's awesome adventure. We would love to be able to send you more information about the opportunities to partner together. Just drop us a line and we will get back to you to answer your questions and get you more information.

Check back to the blog for updates on the progress, stories of the faithfulness of the Father, and ways you can lift up this task.

History of the blog

The 12:2 Times was originally published in May 2005 as our newsletters during our time in China from August 2005-June 2006. The title originates from Romans and is explained more in our first issue:
The newsletter of Jeremy and M’Lynn debuts under the title “12:2 TIMES.” The title for our newsletter originates from the verse we have adopted, Romans 12:2, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” ... We decided to “not conform to the pattern of this world” ... and instead chose sometime completely out of this world. We decided to live in China and teach English for 10 months, no matter how foreign it may seem. ... We believe teaching in China will transform and renew our minds by experiencing a new culture and customs, as well as meeting many new people.

The 12:2 Times was not published from July 2006 until it was reintroduced as an email newsletter in May 2007 as a way to continue our communication with all those who supported us during our first year in China. Below is an excerpt from the first e-newsletter:

…to the first 12:2 Times E-News. While in China, we enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends and sharing updates about what we’ve been up. One goal we both had when we returned from China was to be intentional about building and keeping relationships. Deciding to take this goal seriously, why can’t we continue to share updates, photos, joys, and concerns in the states? There is no reason for us not to!! So we hope you enjoy this and we look forward to hearing from each one of you!

The 12:2 Times was published until July 2007. During this time several attempts were made to publish on online version of the newsletter. In August 2007 the 12:2 Times became the “TwelveTwoTimes” and was published online. In April 2008 the website evolved in the blog you see today.

Currently the TwelveTwoTimes is published once per month as an email newsletter and the website is updated periodically. We will continue to update the TwelveTwoTimes to involve more and more people in the task of reaching those who have not yet heard.
